The Power of Storytelling

Storytelling is the most powerful way to put ideas into the world today.
Thus said Robert McKee.

When I was a child, I loved to listen to stories of old people. In my elementary days, stories in the books and comics fascinated me. In school, we were told stories, and one by one, we were instructed to repeat the story to the teacher to check if we understood things right.

During my high school and college days, I was an editor of our school publications, and we, as campus journalists, were trained on the right storytelling. This honed my skills in news, feature and editorial writing. And yes true, pen is powerful, as it is a right vehicle to express one's stories.

Storytelling has a profound significance for both writers / narrators and readers alike.

Amidst the deluge of information that inundates our lives, stories emerge as ageless vessels carrying the essence of human experiences and emotions. From the primeval glow of campfires to the digital glow of screens, storytelling remains an integral part of our culture, connecting souls across time and space. However, its significance transcends mere amusement; it molds perceptions, nurtures empathy, and even unveils pathways to newfound opportunities, including financial gain.

The Craft of Masterful Storytelling

Storytelling is an art that, when wielded adeptly, possesses the power to captivate and invigorate audiences. Mastery of this craft entails embracing various essential components:

1.  Grasping the Core Components

A well-constructed story invariably features an enthralling plot, relatable characters, a vibrant setting, conflicts, resolutions, and a central theme. Proficiency in these elements crafts a narrative that's both engaging and enduring.

2.  Eliciting Emotional Harmonies

Exceptional stories stir emotions. Whether it's elation, sorrow, trepidation, or exhilaration, forging emotional bonds ensures an unforgettable experience.

3.  Embracing Authenticity

Authentic narratives resonate deeply. Drawing from personal encounters, observations, and sentiments enriches your storytelling, forging an immediate connection with your audience.

4.  Enriching Imagery and Descriptive Linguistics

Conjure a vivid mental tapestry by employing descriptive language that tantalizes the senses. This invites readers to immerse themselves wholly in the narrative.

5.  Voice and Tenor

Your distinctive narrative voice sets you apart. The tone can be humorous, dramatic, or contemplative, contingent upon the message you wish to convey.

Storytelling: A Quiver for Daily Life and Prosperity

Storytelling extends beyond books and films, manifesting its influence across various life domains:

1.  Professional Advancement

Profound communication is a cornerstone of achievement across all domains. The art of narrating ideas elevates your sway and impact within professional spheres.

2.  Entrepreneurial Odyssey

Entrepreneurs harness storytelling to shape brand identity, forge emotional ties with customers, and carve a niche amidst competitive markets.

3.  Content Creation

Bloggers, vloggers, and social media mavens leverage storytelling to enrapture their audience and channel traffic towards their platforms.

4.  Oratory Prowess

Whether dispensing a discourse, TED talk, or seminar, interweaving anecdotes and narratives can demystify intricate subjects and etch them into memory.

Checking the Authenticity in Stories

In an era marked by misinformation, validating the veracity of stories assumes paramount importance. The diligent pursuit of facts, cross-referencing sources, and a judicious evaluation of information's credibility serve as litmus tests to ascertain a narrative's authenticity. Consuming narratives responsibly necessitates a discerning intellect and an unwavering commitment to verifiable truths.

Paying Homage to Storytelling Maestros who Echo through Eternity

Declaring a single "supreme" storyteller remains subjective, contingent on individual inclinations. Nonetheless, certain names consistently grace this discourse:

1.  William Shakespeare

His ageless plays and sonnets have indelibly etched their mark on literature, plumbing the depths of human sentiment and psychology.

2.  Homer

The ancient Greek bard's epic poems "The Iliad" and "The Odyssey" laid the bedrock for Western literature and storytelling.

3.  Scheherazade

The mythical Persian queen, her tales in "One Thousand and One Nights" beguiled a king through stories within stories, crafting a remarkable testament to the power of narratives.

Storytelling stands as a tapestry weaving through the essence of humanity, binding us across generations and cultures. A skill worthy of refinement, it bestows not just joy, but a doorway to various dimensions of life.

As narrators / writers, we wield the capacity to motivate, enlighten, and entertain, while as viewers / readers, we traverse diverse realms, gaining fresh vantage points. Thus, whether sharing anecdotes around a campfire or fabricating narratives for vocational advancement, remember that the art of storytelling is a voyage that enriches both the teller / writer and the listener / reader.

I passionately merge words into tales that breathe life into the silent corners of my heart. It brings me happiness and serves as a therapy. By God's mercy and grace, a time will come when I will share my colorful stories with my grandchildren.

"Wasting of Women's Talents Must Cease"

Here I am in a four-cornered room, thinking of many things that I can do considering my talents, but I cannot utilize to the fullest due to some obstacles which are not just in the mind but real. I am woman -- I know I have a power inside me yet I feel vulnerable. There is an interesting article published in Gulf News, "In the Middle East, Momentum for Women Must Pick Up Speed" written by Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, dated 31 May 2018. Very timely, indeed, that I saw this article few minutes back. I am inspired to read similar write-ups promoting advocacy on importance of empowering women by giving them solid support. Can we quantify wasted women's talents? Maybe we can in terms of lost opportunities. Or can we enumerate wasted women's talents if we cannot quantify them? There are women who are full-time mothers and housewives, either by choice or by tradition or both. We know that being so is indeed a tiring unpaid job for many women. For some they ...

Of Ginger-Lemon Water, and A/C Off

And so I am now again drinking a lot of hot lemon tea with ginger. It will help improve my health immunity .  WebMD.com says, " Lemon is a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants, which both have immunity-boosting properties. Ginger also has immunity-boosting properties and can guard against some bacteria." Am coughing when my back is sweating. The air conditioner is switched off again. If you are in the Gulf area, even if it is December it is still hot. There are times when it is even hotter inside my partitioned room with a window facing the sun, no building near ours to block the scorching heat -- than the actual temperature outside. I have a temperature app in my mobile phone and I regularly check it. When I switch on the air conditioner, somebody else switches it off. (I remember when we transferred to the our previous flat and I was told that the A/C was centralized, 24/7 on. I was grateful because the heat of human bodies, the lights, their gadgets -- laptops and m...

'Hotelcation' and More

My youngest daughter surprised me with the good news that she was allowed to go on Eid vacation for some days. She badly needed rest and relaxation for a work-life balance. It was very hot here in the UAE when we got blissfully reunited at 2 PM.  It was Eid so most hotels nearby were either fully booked, or if not, their room rate boards showed AED800/day +/-. My frugal daughter stepped back when she saw 'towering' figures. A I watched my Buninay eating halohalo in our meeting place, a restaurant serving Filipino foods, I held my tears back. She ordered 'mixed-with-everything' fried rice, grilled squid and  kinilaw  (raw fish with vinegar, chili and chopped onions).  Memories of her childhood flooded in my mind. How time flies! My then-baby-who-is-now-a-lady wanted to spoil me. Felt truly blessed beyond words. We hopped to Seattle's Best in the mall near the mosque. While indulging myself with my favorite Cinnabon bites and strawberry smoothies, and my ol...
