COVID-19 :: It's NOT Over Yet

The coronavirus pandemic is NOT over yet. We must always get updated on related news and rulings, local and international, through verifiable sources so we know how to properly deal with it. As per Worldometers.info as of this writing, 02 August 2020, at 1232H, the following are the figures: Coronavirus Cases: 18,043,836 Deaths: 689,187 Recovered: 11,341,930 The Philippines with 109,702,792 population, is the 25th in the ranking of highest number of cases. There are 103,185 cases, with 5,032 new cases and 2,059 deaths. Total recovered cases figure is 65,557. This is very alarming and scary because it has claimed many healthcare practitioners' lives. They must be treated with high respect, like heroes, as they risk their own lives to protect others'. From the bottom of my heart, I salute and thank them all. As I look at the figures of related cases in one of cities in our place which has been put in total lockdown, I noticed that many cases were due to exposur...

On Closing of Businesses

It is a challenging time so many businesses are closing. If you are an expatriate in a foreign country and suddenly you receive a letter that you will be laid off, it is like a nightmare. Worse is when you have a family to survive and some payables to meet -- credit cards, loans, mortgaged property, car dues, etc. Unless you are well-prepared for this scenario, it is really unthinkable. Only today, there are some news articles showing contents that  some bank branches will close so it means many employees will lose jobs. The closing of many businesses contributes also to this because banks generate revenues by investing the deposits of companies and individuals, mostly employees, that will give high returns. It is sad to know that even the financial institutions that handle money also get vulnerable. Normally when other industries are 'sick', the banks are there to lend resources so they can recover. They play the 'doctor' role. But if the doctor is sick, who...

Boosting Immune System

When I went to the pharmacy to buy Mucosolvan syrup and sore throat lozenges as I suffered from flu and persistent cough for more than a month, the pharmacist recommended Mucosolvan tablets (3x a day) and  Blueberry Naturals  lemon-flavored lozenges good for two (2) months, 60 tablets. She said,  "One (1) chewable lozenge a day supports the immune system. It has Vitamin C and bee propolis, and gluten-free." The brand  website shows that zinc is an essential mineral that our body needs for immune support, growth and general health.  In the Products tab, there is a dropdown menu which asks "What are you looking for?" and it falls under Minerals . It further says that it  " supports bone and muscle function, and promote red blood cell production. " I checked the supplement fact and it shows 15mg of zinc (as citrate, gluconate). By the way, do not get confused. Blueberry Naturals is a brand, 'inspired by blueberries and its wholesome ...

Equitable Access to Health Care Services

President Rodrigo Roa Duterte, president of the Philippines, signed into law the Universal Health Care Act (UHCA) yesterday. The law provides automatic enrolment of Filipinos to the National Health Insurance Program and expands Philhealth coverage to include free medical consultations and laboratory tests. I remember when my uncle said that my paternal grandmother died due to lack of medicines to treat her hypertension. I never saw her face, but another uncle told me she looked like me. If there was a law like this in the past, perhaps she would have lived longer. Many people died because they are poor and do not have access to healthcare services. Health is wealth and wealth is health. If you are sick, you are not fit to work and if you cannot work, who will pay the bills for you and your family (if you are the breadwinner), to survive? With this very timely signing of the said healthcare act, every Filipino will be given equitable access to quality and affordable healthcare...
