Creating Comfort and Functionality in a Rented Small Space

Residential space rental rate in Dubai, UAE is high so for many expatriates, they settle for shared spaces.

There are those who rent partitioned spaces, more or less with area of 15 ft,  5 x 3 tiles (1 x 1 ft). For them, they will just sleep and what they can save from space rental fees, they would rather allocate for survival, for remittance to family back home, and savings.

As a bed spacer in a partitioned room with limited space, maximizing functionality and creating a comfortable resting place is crucial.

If you are one, here's how you could set up your space:

1. Bed and Sleeping Arrangement

Invest in a space-saving loft bed or bunk bed to utilize vertical space. Place your bed against one of the longer walls, leaving enough clearance between the bed and the ceiling. Choose a mattress that suits your comfort preferences. Use under-bed storage for items like shoes, clothes, or bins.

2. Foldable Furniture

Opt for foldable or collapsible furniture. A folding table attached to the wall can serve as a workspace and dining area. Foldable chairs can be hung when not in use. This allows you to free up floor space during the day.

3. Shelving Units

Install wall-mounted shelves or bookcases to store books, personal items, and decorative pieces. Utilize the vertical space for storage, keeping the floor clear.

4.  Divider and Privacy

If your partitioned room lacks complete privacy, consider using a decorative room divider or curtain to create a sense of separation and privacy for your sleeping area.

5. Multi-Functional Furniture

Choose furniture pieces that have multiple uses. For example, a storage ottoman can serve as a seat, a footrest, and storage for items like blankets or clothes.

6.  Organizers and Hooks

Utilize hooks, pegs, and wall-mounted organizers to hang bags, hats, scarves, and accessories. This helps keep the floor and furniture clutter-free.

7. Lighting

Install wall-mounted or hanging lights to save space on bedside tables. Proper lighting is essential for reading and creating a cozy atmosphere.

8.  Minimize Clutter

Keep only essential items in your space to prevent overcrowding. Regularly declutter and organize your belongings to maintain a clean and neat environment.

9.  Color and Decor

Choose light colors for walls and furniture to create an illusion of more space. Add personal touches with wall art, mirrors, or posters to make the space feel cozy and inviting.

10.  Cable Management

Keep cords and cables organized and out of the way to prevent tangling and tripping hazards.

11. Functional Layout

Plan your layout to ensure easy movement and access to different areas of the room. Consider the flow of traffic and arrange furniture accordingly.

12. Personal Touch

Add elements that reflect your personality and make the space feel like home. This could include small plants, photographs, or other decorative items.

By carefully selecting furniture, utilizing vertical space, and maintaining an organized and clutter-free environment, you can transform your partitioned room into a functional and comfortable living space that meets your needs.

These are notes also to myself as presently I am in a very small space. Honestly speaking, I am not that comfortable as I need a better conducive space to be productive at home.

I will passionately manifest it.

In the mean time, I value my tranquility here, somehow, despite all odds.

Tranquillity hides in small spaces, and when found needs to be treasured, because you know it’s a phantom that will slip away again.

So said Diane Ackerman.

"Wasting of Women's Talents Must Cease"

Here I am in a four-cornered room, thinking of many things that I can do considering my talents, but I cannot utilize to the fullest due to some obstacles which are not just in the mind but real. I am woman -- I know I have a power inside me yet I feel vulnerable. There is an interesting article published in Gulf News, "In the Middle East, Momentum for Women Must Pick Up Speed" written by Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, dated 31 May 2018. Very timely, indeed, that I saw this article few minutes back. I am inspired to read similar write-ups promoting advocacy on importance of empowering women by giving them solid support. Can we quantify wasted women's talents? Maybe we can in terms of lost opportunities. Or can we enumerate wasted women's talents if we cannot quantify them? There are women who are full-time mothers and housewives, either by choice or by tradition or both. We know that being so is indeed a tiring unpaid job for many women. For some they ...

Of Ginger-Lemon Water, and A/C Off

And so I am now again drinking a lot of hot lemon tea with ginger. It will help improve my health immunity .  WebMD.com says, " Lemon is a rich source of vitamin C and antioxidants, which both have immunity-boosting properties. Ginger also has immunity-boosting properties and can guard against some bacteria." Am coughing when my back is sweating. The air conditioner is switched off again. If you are in the Gulf area, even if it is December it is still hot. There are times when it is even hotter inside my partitioned room with a window facing the sun, no building near ours to block the scorching heat -- than the actual temperature outside. I have a temperature app in my mobile phone and I regularly check it. When I switch on the air conditioner, somebody else switches it off. (I remember when we transferred to the our previous flat and I was told that the A/C was centralized, 24/7 on. I was grateful because the heat of human bodies, the lights, their gadgets -- laptops and m...

'Hotelcation' and More

My youngest daughter surprised me with the good news that she was allowed to go on Eid vacation for some days. She badly needed rest and relaxation for a work-life balance. It was very hot here in the UAE when we got blissfully reunited at 2 PM.  It was Eid so most hotels nearby were either fully booked, or if not, their room rate boards showed AED800/day +/-. My frugal daughter stepped back when she saw 'towering' figures. A I watched my Buninay eating halohalo in our meeting place, a restaurant serving Filipino foods, I held my tears back. She ordered 'mixed-with-everything' fried rice, grilled squid and  kinilaw  (raw fish with vinegar, chili and chopped onions).  Memories of her childhood flooded in my mind. How time flies! My then-baby-who-is-now-a-lady wanted to spoil me. Felt truly blessed beyond words. We hopped to Seattle's Best in the mall near the mosque. While indulging myself with my favorite Cinnabon bites and strawberry smoothies, and my ol...
